Schoenhut Toys - The Original Developer (1920-1960)
In 1922, a young inventor named William Stout shook up the toy industry with his mini indoor golf game. This game had people in New York City lined up around the block in the blistering cold just to buy one of these "curiously awesome" toy sets. The original version of the toy had a male and female miniature golfer, aptly named Tommy Green and Sissy Lofter. Schoenhut Toys had decades of success marketing this toy, but their run ended when the company was eventually taken over Marx Toys.
Marx Toys - The Arnold Palmer Indoor Golf Game Era (1960-2010)
Marx began selling a generic item branded Pro Shot Golf with modest success. Their big break came when a charismatic young golfer named Arnold Daniel Palmer stepped on the golf scene. Palmer entered into one of sport's first celebrity endorsement deals. Arnie, aka "The King", was renowned for his skill, charm, and significant influence on the sport of golf, all before viral social media even existed. He was the original brand ambassador, and grew a massive group of followers, coined by the media as Arnie's Army.
Arnold Palmer went on to become a 4X Masters Champion, though it was his final round at the 1960 U.S. Open (Cherry Hills CC) that established his status as one of golf's greatest stars. His comeback win against the younger Jack Nicklaus was perhaps the most dramatic final round in the history of golf. With all his fame and success, it's no wonder that everyone wanted a golf toy bearing his likeness!
Classic Golf Gifts - Thirty-Years of Success (mid-90s to present day)
Although the Arnold Palmer license was dropped nearly 15 years ago, the core product remains true to the original version, with a number of modifications to improve overall gameplay. While many imitators have come and gone, Classic Golf Gifts, an Indiana-based company, has stayed the course, no pun intended. You can still buy this game at their website, www.miniindoorgolf.com, but the company's founder, Jay, is getting ready to transition his company to a new crop of avid golfers and toy enthusiasts.
When asked about the incredible longevity of this item, Jay credits the toy’s timeless and enduring appeal to its sheer simplicity — wholesome analog fun. Although there is a wide range of mobile and console video games at your fingertips, true golf isn't meant to be played on a screen, or on a couch. It needs to be played upright, and is best enjoyed when in the company of others. As he puts it, the beauty of his mini indoor golf game is that it leaves you feeling as if you've just played a shrunk down version of real golf. As in real life, once you get the ball to behave how you want it to, that's when the true magic happens!
Better Together Golf - Taking Mini Indoor Golf to the Next Level (2024 to present day)
What initially started as a mini indoor golf fan club, quickly progressed beyond the hobby stage when a group of passionate toy builders met in Sacramento during the month of November 2024. A company named Better Together Golf LLC was formed, bringing together Jay and his newfound business associates, along with top toy industry experts and product engineers. This joint venture aims to produce a greatly enhanced version of this timeless golf toy, with a preliminary release date of December 2025.
